ESCAPE – There’s one thing you won’t find in a cruise ship lift.

According to Escape’s cruise expert Andrea Black, the lifts in cruise ships are unique. “Ever looked at the elevator buttons on a ship and noticed there’s no Deck 13? The number is considered unlucky in western culture so cruise lines usually either skip it or use the deck as a public area rather than accommodation. Interestingly, MSC Cruises ships have a Deck 13, but no Deck 17 because the cruise line’s founder is Italian and 17 is considered unlucky there. 17 in Roman numerals is XVII, an anagram of VIXI which is Latin for “I have lived’ that is, ‘my life is done’.”
